The Ins and Outs of Journalism!

Its safe to say on my part that Journalism is an absolute obsession.
If you look closely at some of our loved Journo’s they love and enjoy
what they do, they simply just have the knack of providing us with the
information that we all enjoy to read or even listen to. So now here
is a person who is faced of making a decision to become a
journalist…what to do! Where to start? This are questions that reel
in your head while trying to make sense of everything. Just like I
said before, its very important to choose a career that will bring you
joy and happiness, its should be something that you’re passionate
about!

I read among one journos story of how they became interested in such a
career, and one thing I noticed is how they wanted to provide news
differently from others, they were filled with curiosity and urge for
reading and finding out everything about anything all the time! Phewww
just like I said that’s too much obsession!

TeenBee, like u asked which field would I recommend, I’m not that
sure if I can choose for you but I can surely try to direct to the one
that you might like….look at my first article n jot down what’s
important to you, your interests and all. Then look at these following
fields and match them to your personality. Remember it all goes down
to the kind of person or individual that you are! And if you find that
you connect with something then you know what you have to study.

Do you want to be a reporter? Editor, writer for newspapers or
magazines? Do you enjoy writing, reading about: ethics, religion,
leftists ideas, environment, peace movements, community or just
blogging! Are you in the more serious topics like the news or
entertainment news talking about celebs or fashion it all depends on
your field of interests!

There are many forms of writing and these are just the few:

1. News!
A. Breaking news: Telling about an event as it happens.
B. Feature stories: A detailed look at something interesting that’s not breaking news.
C. Enterprise or Investigative stories: Stories that uncover information that few people knew.

2. Opinion!
A. Editorials: Unsigned articles that express a publication’s opinion.
B. Columns: Signed articles that express the writer’s reporting and his conclusions.
C. Reviews: Such as concert, restaurant or movie reviews.

3.Online!
A.Blogs: Online diaries kept by individuals or small groups.
B.Discussion boards: Online question and answer pages where anyone can participate. C.Wikis: Articles that any reader can add to or change.

And remember when you report about a story ask yourself this five questions!

Who are they?
What were they doing?
Where were they doing it?
When they do it?
Why did they do it?

I hope that I helped…and that the information is useful…furthermore you can go to: www.journinfo@wits.ac.za for more info.
I hope that you do well!
